Willis-Knighton/Independence Bowl Community Service Scholarship applications are available in my office. This is a $2500 scholarship that goes to a graduating senior in Bossier Parish. It has been given for the past 2 years and a Parkway senior has won it both times!!! You must have a 3.0 GPA and community service. THIS APPLICATION MUST BE RETURNED TO ME BY OCTOBER 29. The VFW sponsors the Voice of Democracy audio essay contest each year with cash prizes. Just write an essay , record it on a cassette, and turn in to me along with short app. Theme is “Service and Sacrifice by America's Veterans Benefit Today's Youth by….” Pick up app in my office. All entries must be turned in to me by Oct. 29.

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program is open to African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American students. You must have a 3.3 GPA, community service, extracurricular activities, and be eligible for a Pell Grant (meaning low to medium family income) to apply. This is a huge scholarship that can continue through graduate school. It is an extensive application process, so you would need to get started soon if you wish to qualify. If you are a Student Council or Class Officer, see Mrs. Dupree regarding the United States Senate Youth Program scholarship. Award is $5000. Deadline is Oct. 1.

The Council for America's First Freedom announces the 16th annual first Freedom Student Competition. This national essay contest offers students an opportunity to compete for a $3000, $1500, or $750 award as they examine the First Amendment and the history and relevance of religious freedom in America. National Foundation for Advancement of the Arts (NFAA) is offering $3000 to students pursuing a degree in dance, music, visual arts, theater, writing, and film, etc. Deadline Oct. 1. Go to www.nfaa.org .

WTS Scholarship. Go to www.wtsnational.org to apply. This is $1500 scholarship for women who plan to pursue a degree in transportation or a transportation-related field (transportation engineering planning, finance, or logistics). Requires 3.0 GPA and minority candidates are encouraged to apply.

National Hispanic Scholarship Fund offers $1000 renewable scholarships to Hispanic students. Must have 3.0 GPA, financial need, community involvement, and achievement. Deadline Oct. 15. Go to www.hsf.net .

Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation scholarships range from $4000-$20,000. Apply at www.coca-colascholars.org . Deadline Oct. 31. Requires 3.0 GPA, leadership.

Horatio Alger Association offers scholarships are for students who plan to attend Loyola University, McNeese, Tulane, UNO, or Xavier. These scholarships are for students who have risen above adversity to maintain their grades, remain active in their community and participate in extracurricular activities. There are fifty $10,500 scholarships to be awarded in Louisiana, ten for each of the above-mentioned universities. To apply, go to . Adjusted gross family income of $50,000 or less is preferred.

Indian Health Employees Scholarship Fund offers scholarship to students of Indian descent who wish to pursue a health career and have a C average. Go to www.nmche.org for info.

AAU Youth Excel Program Scholarship offers $500-$3000 to students who participate in at least one sanctioned high school sport and show involvement in the community. Go to for info. Persevering through adversity is the key ingredient in the awarding of these scholarships.

Lifeshare Blood Centers is offering a scholarship for those who donate blood at least four times between your 17th birthday and graduation. You must have a 2.7 GPA.. This is a $750 scholarship. Applications will be given out in the spring, but a PHS student will definitely win one of these scholarships. We have 5 blood drives scheduled for this year, so consider donating!
